Cast acrylic has superior properties than its extruded counterpart, these include:
Clarity: Higher optical clarity and superior surface finish.
Durability: More scratch-resistant and higher chemical resistance.
Strength: Greater dimensional stability and resistance to warping. Higher melting point.
Customization: Can be produced in a wide variety of colours, thicknesses, and finishes. It is better for machining and laser engraving, as it produces a cleaner edge.
In short, if your project requires high optical quality, durability, and intricate machining, cast acrylic is the better choice.
Cast acrylic offers a number of benefits with properties that often outperform glass!
Impact Resistance: Acrylic is up to 17 times more impact-resistant than standard glass of the same thickness. It is far less likely to break/shatter on impact.
Shatterproof: If cast acrylic does break, it tends to crack into large, dull-edged pieces rather than shattering into dangerous, sharp shards like glass.
Flexibility: Acrylic is more flexible than glass, which allows it to absorb force without breaking.
Ease of Handling: Its lighter weight makes it easier and safer to handle, transport, and install, especially for large sheets.
Structural Efficiency: The reduced weight places less stress on supporting structures, which can lead to cost savings in construction and design.
Higher Light Transmission: Clear cast acrylic has a light transmission rate of up to 93%, which is higher than the 80−90% of standard glass.
No Tint: Unlike glass, which can have a greenish tint, acrylic is perfectly clear, with pure water-white edges.
Low Thermal Conductivity: It has a lower coefficient of thermal conductivity, meaning it transfers heat more slowly. This makes it more energy-efficient for applications like windows, helping to regulate temperature and reduce heating costs.
Customization: Cast acrylic can be easily cut, drilled, engraved, and polished using standard tools.
Weatherability: Does not yellow or become brittle over time from long-term exposure to sunlight, making it ideal for outdoor applications.
Cast Acrylic is a strong and clear material with many uses. It is known for its durability, optical clarity, and resistance to chemicals.
Outdoor Signs: Great for illuminated signs and large displays because it's weather and UV-resistant.
Point-of-Purchase (POP) Displays: Used for premium retail displays and fixtures due to its attractive finish.
Laser-Engraved Signs: Engraves cleanly and precisely for detailed, intricate signs.
Glazing: A lightweight, strong alternative to glass for windows, skylights, and partitions.
Aquariums: The ideal material for large aquariums and underwater viewing panels because of its strength and clarity.
Furniture: Used for modern, sleek furniture like tables and shelving.
Decorative Panels: Comes in many colours and is used for decorative panels and kitchen splashbacks.
Picture Frames: A lightweight, shatterproof, and UV-resistant substitute for glass in frames.
Machined Parts: Perfect for projects requiring complex machining like drilling and routing.
Medical Equipment: Its chemical resistance makes it useful for lab and hospital components.
Awards: A popular choice for custom trophies and awards due to its clarity and ease of shaping.
We recommend you clean with mild (warm) soapy water, using a soft non-abrasive cloth. Never use window cleaners, alcohol-based products, abrasive cleaners or brushes as these can damage the surface. For stubborn marks, we’d recommend a specialised Acrylic cleaner.
While more scratch - resistant than other plastics, Acrylic is softer than glass and can scratch if not handled carefully. However, minor scratches and blemishes can often be polished out using specialised Acrylic polishes.
The ideal thickness will depend on your specific requirement/project. Please find below some common uses for clear Acrylic.
If you are struggling to determine which thickness would best suit you, please email us at support@mitleeplastics.co.uk and we’ll do our best to get you on the right track.
Yes. Our acrylic sheets are UV/Weather - resistant and suitable for outdoor use. They don’t turn yellow or degrade significantly when exposed to sunlight, this makes them ideal for greenhouse panels, outdoor signage, garden features etc.
